The Company was formed in 1984 by Mr Steve Chambers and was originally situated on the Newcastle Airport Industrial Estate, as a car repair and recovery business, with just two vehicles for courtesy use. In 1996 the company branched out into van hire, and then in 2000 moved to purpose built premises in Kenton Bank Foot, and AM Hire now boasts a fleet of more than 400 vehicles. The next step in this success story is the Gateshead branch, situated at the end of the Team Valley Trading Estate. This branch which opened in January 2007 supplies vehicles to most of South Tyneside. In 2010 we opened the Sunderland branch in Pennywell, located opposite Sunderland Echo just off the A19. This branch covers all of Wearside and is new and modern just like our vehicles. At AM Hire you will find a pleasant friendly atmosphere without the hard sell factor of most hire companies. The staff are friendly, warming and will give a professional quality service. Customers return to AM Hire because of the friendly service and good quality vehicles at very competitive prices. All these things make them feel like the valued customers they are. AM Hire is a small independent company with a big heart, however in 1997 AM Hire realised that large hire companies were buying vehicles at a far bigger discount due to the quantities they bought and joined the United Rental Group. United is a group of 350 independent small companies, who together have a huge need for vehicles, and can demand higher discounts than they could on their own. These discounts can make a smaller firm like AM Hire, more competitive, and ensure they can afford to change vehicles regularly, keeping the fleet new, smart and safe. AM Hire was awarded the partnership with SIXT Rent a Car in 2005, giving them a large brother, without loosing their independence. In 2008, the SIXT area was expanded to cover the whole of Tyneside, making it one of the largest SIXT partners in the country. In 2010 the company was awarded Wearside, and our new premises are well placed to deal with the increasing demands of one of the largest companies in the rental business. AM Hire have a fleet of cars ranging from the small Ford Fiesta through to the Mercedes E Class, and a host of people carriers, from seven to seventeen seaters. The fleet is changed regularly to bring the latest models and the best prices to the customer. Our commercial fleet consists of large Luton Box Vans, with electric tail lifts, which are excellent for large house moves or for more bulky items, down to the smallest van like the Ford Connect. In Between, AM Hire has the ever reliable Ford Transit Short Wheel Base, which is known to everyone as a ‘Transit’. There are two larger transit vans in the range, the Long Wheel Base, and the Jumbo, which gives a four-metre capacity. The addition of the Ford Ranger 4x4, and the cabin van, which has six seats and a large area behind for luggage, bikes, clubs etc., has made AM Hire confident in catering for the needs of their customers. Michelle joined AM Hire at Gateshead in 2008 after working in the motor trade for over ten years. Michelle now manages the Newcastle Office, and deals with most of our expanding corporate customers. She and her team offer a friendly, warm, and stress free approach to vehicle rental.
Linda was recruited to AM Hire in 2007 from the retail business. She has served at both the Newcastle and Gateshead branches, and now is responsible for training of new staff at our Sunderland branch. Her warmth and the enthusiasm continues to make her popular with both the customers and staff.
Scott is a mine of information, most of it gained from his many years working in the motor trade. His experience of all types of vehicles, capacities and loads, helps customers make the right choice of vehicle for their needs. Apart from his warmth, and knowledge, Beware! Scott can talk on most subjects so add a little time to your plans. 
Has been with the company from the outset and makes sure that all vehicles are inspected, serviced, and road worthy to the highest standard. He is responsible for resolving any problems that customers have with a vehicle. 
Garage Manager, Gary Kilgour, leads the valeting team. Gary has been with the company for many years and is a solid workhorse. Gary and his team ensure all vehicles are cleaned to a very high standard and presented to customer’s satisfaction. Gary also makes sure the staff that are well looked after with numerous cuppa’s.
